When you get a fish on the line a sequence minigame starts where you need to match the skill to the debuff of the fish at the time. An example would be if the debuff for "Stand Firm Left" shows up you press that button. Similarily for the other skills as well.

In ArcheAge, fishing can refer to two types of activities: Bait fishing and Sports fishing

Bait Fishing

Bait Fishing is the act of using a fishing rod, bait worms and casting your line in any body of water.

It will reward various types of fish, which can be sold as they are, chopped as chum for fishing spots or turned into Dawn Lake essence

Sports Fishing

Sport fishing has two different forms, freshwater (inland lakes, ponds) and saltwater (out at sea). In order to start sport fishing you need a specific chum for the specific fish at the pool. When you get a fish on the line a sequence minigame starts where you need to match the skill to the debuff of the fish at the time. An example would be if the debuff for "Stand Firm Left" shows up you press that button. Similarily for the other skills as well.

These fish act similiar to crates where they have a loot table when you open them and can give you items like treasure maps, and Solzreed Mackeral that convert 3 fish to 1 Dawn Lake Essence among various other items.

In order to Advanced Fish you need a rod capable of doing it as well as max proficiency in fishing.
